Plan advice ages badly, so this page deliberately avoids quoting message counts and prices. What does not age is how to work out which tier fits you.

Two questions decide it

How often do you hit the five-hour window? Never: the free or entry tier is doing its job. Once or twice a week: the next tier up. Daily, especially mid-afternoon: you are working in a way the session window was not sized for, and a bigger multiple is the honest answer.

Do you need the agentic surfaces? Cowork is available on the paid tiers, and Claude Code's practical usefulness scales with how much allowance you can give an agent that reads a lot. If your use is conversational, extra allowance buys you less than you would think.

Where upgrading does not help

When the cost is a habit. Very long conversations and unbounded agentic loops consume any allowance you give them. A larger plan run the same way runs out later, not never — see You hit a limit. Now what..

When the model tier is the problem. If the answers are not good enough, more allowance of the same model does not help. That is a model-choice question, not a plan question.

What goes wrong

Buying the top tier "to be safe" before knowing your pattern. A month on a lower tier with Settings → Usage open tells you more than any comparison table.

Assuming a limit is permanent. Anthropic states it may also apply other caps at its discretion. Plan around your observed reset behaviour, not around a number someone published last year.

How to check it worked

A month after changing tier, look at whether you still hit a limit at the same point in the week. If you do, the plan was not the constraint.
