The training toggle, retention, and what you agreed to

Claude

Consumer and commercial plans have different rules. Most people do not know which one they are on, and the difference is measured in years.

There is a setting in your account that decides whether your conversations are used to train future models, and it changes how long they are kept by roughly a factor of sixty. It is worth two minutes of your attention.

Consumer plans

Individual plans carry a toggle, worded along the lines of "You can help improve Claude".

If you decline, the previous retention behaviour continues: roughly 30 days.

If you accept, your chats and coding sessions may be used to improve the models, and data may be retained in de-identified form in training pipelines for up to five years.

You can change the choice at any time in your privacy settings.

Commercial plans are different

Claude for Work, Enterprise, Education, and API usage are governed by commercial terms that prohibit training on your inputs. This is not the same agreement, and it is the single most common confusion in this area.

The practical consequence: an employee using a personal Pro account for work material is operating under different terms than the same person on the company's Team plan, and possibly with the training toggle on.

Deletion is not one thing

Deleting a conversation removes it from your account. It does not necessarily remove every copy immediately, it does not affect anything already used in training, and it does not apply retroactively to a model that has shipped. Treat deletion as tidying, not as erasure.

Try this

Open your privacy settings and look at the toggle. Whatever it says, the useful exercise is to answer: do I know what I chose, or was it a default? Most people find it was a default. Then decide.

What goes wrong

Assuming your work account and your personal account behave the same. They do not; they are different contracts.

Assuming "delete" means gone. It means removed from your account.

Deciding once and never revisiting. Terms change. This one changed in 2025 and required existing users to make a choice to keep using the service.

Putting confidential material in a personal account because it was open in another tab. The tab is not the question. The terms are.

How to check it worked

Find the setting and read what it currently says for your account rather than what you remember choosing. If you administer accounts for other people, check what the default is for a newly created one — that default is what most of your users will have.
