Raise the checking with the stakes

The same answer deserves a skim when it names a restaurant and a real verification when it names a medication dose. Scale the check to the cost of being wrong.

Quick fix: Raise the checking with the stakes

Instead of Treat every answer with the same default trust, whatever rides on it.

Try Before acting, ask one question of yourself, not the model: what does it cost me if this is wrong? Money, health, legal position, someone else's trust → the answer graduates from "read" to "verify", or to "ask a professional".

Why this works

The model's confidence is flat: it sounds equally sure about a film recommendation and a tax deadline. Your verification effort should not be. The failure is not trusting AI too much in general — it is spending the same two seconds of trust on outputs whose failure costs differ by a factor of a thousand. A stakes check is one deliberate beat, and it is the beat that decides whether an error becomes an anecdote or an incident.

When this applies

The answer is about to touch money, health, law, safety, or another person's interests — especially when it arrived fluently inside an otherwise casual conversation, which is exactly when the beat gets skipped.

Template

Before I act on this: the cost of being wrong is [low / real / severe]. If real: verify the load-bearing claim against a source I can open. If severe: this needs a qualified human, and the AI's job was to prepare better questions for them.

Where the honest answer is "don't use it for this at all", when not to use it draws those lines. The verification methods are in verifying what you cannot judge, and the arriving-at-the-expert-prepared framing is that page's best trick.
