Sources in Gemini: related to the answer, not proof of it
Gemini
This page covers tools outside your selection. You can still read it. Find matching guides
Google's wording is that source links may be related to parts of a response. A source can also be your own uploaded file, and code citations can carry a licence you are now responsible for.
The Sources button is the closest thing Gemini gives you to showing its work. Reading Google's description of it carefully changes what you should conclude from a link being there.
"Related to", not "drawn from"
Google's wording is that Gemini Apps "may provide links to sources and related content for you to dig deeper", and that these links "may include content that is related to parts of Gemini's response".
Related to. That is a weaker claim than a citation usually implies, and it is the sentence to hold on to. A link under a response is an invitation to read further. Treat it as evidence that the sentence above it is correct only after you have opened it and found the claim.
Sources appear as a button at the bottom of a response or inline within it, and open a side panel. Not every response has them: if the button is absent, Google says Gemini simply provided no links for that response, which is a different thing from the answer being unsourced in the sense you might mean.
A source can be your own file
This is the part with no equivalent at the other providers, and it changes how you read the panel.
The links may include public websites and files you have uploaded, and documents or emails from Google Workspace if you have connected it.
So a citation in Gemini does not necessarily point outward. It can point at your own material, which means "it has sources" and "it checked something external" are separate questions. When you have a connected Workspace or an uploaded repository, expect some of what appears in that panel to be yours.
Quotes, images, and the licence on the code
Google documents three specific citation behaviours, and the third one carries an obligation.
Long quotes. If Gemini directly quotes a large amount of text from a webpage, that page appears in the sources list. Shorter borrowings do not trigger this, so absence of a link is not evidence that nothing was borrowed.
Images. A response including an image from the web shows the source and links to it.
On the double-check button
You will find plenty of descriptions of a "double-check response" feature that marked statements with green and orange highlights against Google Search results.
The current help page does not describe it. The article that used to cover it is now titled View related sources from Gemini Apps and documents the Sources panel only, with no mention of double-checking or highlight colours.
Whether the feature is gone from the product or only from the documentation is not something the page settles, and this site does not assert either. What follows practically is the same either way: do not build a verification habit on it. Open the source and look for the claim.
Try this
Ask something factual and current, open the Sources panel, and sort what you see into two piles: public pages and your own material. Then take the one claim the answer rests on and find it in a public source. The two piles are rarely the proportion people expect.
What goes wrong
Reading a source link as support for the sentence above it. Google says those links may be related to parts of the response.
Assuming every source is external. Uploaded files and connected Workspace documents appear in the same panel.
Concluding nothing was borrowed because no link appeared. Only large direct quotes are documented as producing one.
Copying suggested code past a licence reference. That reference is the warning, and it does not survive the paste.
Relying on double-check to verify an answer. The current documentation does not describe it.
How to check it worked
Open the source and search it for the specific claim, the same check that works everywhere. If the panel is showing your own documents, you have confirmed the answer is grounded in your material and learned nothing about whether it is true of the world. Those need separate checks, and the panel does not distinguish them for you.
